Mythological Illustrations
This collection of mythological motives and characters combines the illustrations published in several books and manuals of the second half of the 19th century (see the bibliography below). Although a few photographs appear in these books, drawings and engravings are the chief way of acquainting the reader with the works of art treasured in far away places. The often anonymous illustrators served an instructive purpose by accurately copying statues and other works of art, but their workmanship also produced eloquent illustrations which sometimes surpass the colorful photographs of our own time. The mythological motives are taken from:

Thomas Bulfinch, The Age of Fable or Beauties of Mythology (1898)
Julius Centerwall, Grekernas och romarnas mytologi (1897)
Charles Mills Gayley, The Classic Myths in English Literature (1893)
Alexander S. Murray, Manual of Mythology (1898)
A. H. Petiscus, Olympen eller grekernes och romarnes mytologi (1872)
Gustav Schwab, Die schönsten Sagen des klassischen Altertums (1912)
Otto Seemann, Grekernas och romarnes mytologi (1881).

Roscher
This collection of mythological motives and characters adorns the pages of the Ausfürliches Lexikon der griechisches und römisches Mythologie, a detailed encyclopaedia on the Greek and Roman myths that Wilhelm Heinrich Roscher (Göttingen, 1845- Dresden, 1923) started publishing in 1884.

Biographical-bibliographical note on W. H. Roscher:
ROSCHER, Wilhelm Heinrich, Altphilologe, * 12.2. 1845 in Göttingen, + 9.3. 1923 in Dresden. (From Kirchenlexikon.)
