This collection of mythological motives and characters adorns the pages of the Ausfürliches Lexikon der griechisches und römisches Mythologie, a detailed encyclopaedia on the Greek and Roman myths that Wilhelm Heinrich Roscher (Göttingen, 1845- Dresden, 1923) started publishing in 1884.
Although a few low quality photographs appear in the Lexikon, drawings and engravings are the main way of showing the reader the works of art treasured in far away places and museums. The present collection does not include photographs.
The (often anonymous) illustrators served an informative or instructive purpose by copying—sometimes with great accuracy—statues and other works of art. But their knowledge and workmanship produced illustrations of eloquence and character that sometimes surpass the colorful photographs of our own time. Many of these images—or their photographic equivalent—are difficult to find in modern mythological compilations.
Biographical-bibliographical note on W. H. Roscher by Kirchenlexikon:
ROSCHER, Wilhelm Heinrich, Altphilologe, * 12.2. 1845 in Göttingen, + 9.3. 1923 in Dresden. R. war der Sohn des Professors für Nationalökonomie Wilhelm R. in Göttingen. Er wirkte seit 1871 als Oberlehrer an der Fürstenschule in Meißen. 1882 wurde er zum Konrektor an das Gymnasium in Wurzen berufen, wo er von 1894 bis 1905 auch Rektor war. Von Bedeutung sind R.s Forschungen auf dem Gebiet der vergleichenden antiken Mythologie. Sein »Ausführliches Lexikon der griechischen und römischen Mythologie« ist noch heute als ein Standardwerk in Gebrauch.
